Different types of music videos

Types of Music Videos

Performance-based:
  • Feature the artist of the song performing live throughout the video
  • Often consists of close ups of  the artist so that they are the main focus
  • E.g. Uptown Funk By Mark Ronson ft. Bruno Mars. This is a performance-based music video as throughout the whole video, Bruno mars is performing the song. There are also lots of close ups of Bruno and this is a typical feature of Performance based Videos

Narrative- based:
  • Use actors and artists to tell a story
  • Story is often linked to the lyrics( can contain performance elements within the song
  • E.g. Robbers By The 1975. This is a narrative- based video as the story told about a couple who rob a shop to get money to fund their alcohol and drug addiction links to the lyrics and title of the song. The artists are also featured within the music video which is a common feature of a narrative based video.

Concept- based:
  • A creative music video that's based around a certain concept or idea.
  • Don't always feature the artist
  • They are usually unique in some way
  • E.g. Pompeii by Bastille. This is a concept- based video as the whole video is based on the concept of the characters having blacked out eyes. There are small links to the lyrics, but throughout most of the video there is no major connection between both.
