Typical Conventions of a Music Video


Camera Shots:
  • Close ups and extreme close ups of artist
  • Establishing shot/ long shots show the Location, Band, Dancers, Full costumes and artist
  • High and Low angles
  
Camera Movement:
  • Tracking
  • Tilts
  • Panning- Whip Pans
  • Focus Pulls
  • Zoom
  • Crane shots






Editing:
  • Jump cuts
  • Fast pace cuts to add energy
  • Fast takes leads to multiple viewings by the audience as they wont catch everything the first time
  • Text on screen- Song name and Artist
  • Cut to the beat of the music- keep it all in time
 

Post production Digital Effects:
  • Colour correction/ Brightness enhancement
  • Add Filters
  • Slow- Motion
  • Split screens
  • CGI
 



Lighting:
  • Low key lighting when intense and personal
  • High key lighting when happy and upbeat song
  • Sets the mood / atmosphere
  • Spotlights- Highlights one character- mainly the artist
  • Lots of light to bleach out certain things.
  • Deliberate stage lighting often shown in shots
  Mise-en-scene:
  • Reflects the Songs Genre
  • Used to establish a theme in the video
  • Outfits and make up are used to reflect the genre- important in the pop genre
  • Location- Mainly in a studio or on a stage with microphone.
  • Location- Blank background means there is a lot to work with.
  • Open body language- connect withe artist more
  • Direct eye contact during performance
  • Women in Pop- sexualised body language,make up, costume, etc
